Whiplash is ache and rigidity in the neck due to an injury that has led to a sudden distortion of the neck.

Self-Care at Home
Home care aims at alleviating the pain and keeping the amount of inflammation in the soft tissues of the neck to the minimum.

Put ice on the neck for 20 minutes at a time per hour around-the-clock while awake. Avoid direct contact of ice with your skin. Put a towel or a cloth between the ice and the neck. Persist in ice treatment until the pain goes away. (Before applying ice treatment, consult your doctor and do as he or she says.)

It is quite likely that your doctor will make a planning for your treatment which combine all of the following:

Neck massage
Neck rest
Bed rest
Ice therapy
Heat therapy
Oral painkillers and muscle relaxants
Immobilization of the neck with a soft cervical collar (only a minimal benefit if any at all)
Early range of motion exercises as well as heat treatment 3 days after the injury to keep it flexible.
No excess of neck strain for the following week and then proper activity that could be borne in the following weeks.
